The role of an Occasional Helper

We cannot survive without the help of our parents. But one of the things that we need to do is follow the Scouting Association rules for our parent helpers that may opt to help out more than twice a month or who would like to attend any camps or day trips.

We invite our parents to join us at 17th Harrow by becoming a member of the Scout Association.

If you are planning to help out once a month

Come and join us as an Occasional Helper. This will require just a DBS check to be processed
For the adult, this means no additional work, or cost. Just the agreement to have complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

If you are planning to help out more than once a month

A Section Assistant is the next stage up from an Occasional helper. Whereby an Occasional helper would only pop in in once every other month or so… but a Section Assistant could be there a couple of times or once a month.

What do I need to do?

First we need to register you with the Scouts Association and then we can process the DBS Disclosure. Whilst you may already have a DBS Disclosure with your workplace or other, the Scout Association still currently require their own one to be completed.

Taking it further a Section Assistant?

It would be great to you have you on board as a Section Assistant. With this you are a member of the Scout Association and you receive “Years of Service” awards… it also looks great on a c.v.!!!

As a Section Assistant we need you to have a look at a couple of things… the Scouts call it “Getting Started” as it may or may not lead to bigger things, but at least you know what we are about.

There is an element of training to do… but all of the Modules are online. Training can be either completed together as a group, or adults can complete them on their own at home.
The first part of Getting Started is Essential Information (Module 1)… which is what it says on the tin… It provides the basic information required for individuals getting started in adult roles in Scouting, vital to ensuring that all young people can enjoy safe Scouting. The others are information that will help you in Scouting (and beyond).
The list might seem a daunting list… but with a cup of tea and a bit of time, they complete really quickly!
