This is a Barnardo’s x Parent Zone research project that aims to educate and improve practitioners’ awareness about issues in the online world so that they can provide better care and support to young people facing challenges in this area and we are interviewing young people to understand their different views and experiences of the online world and how we can help practitioners keep young people safe online.
If you are able to assist, you will receive a thank you voucher for your participation.
Information
About this project
Barnardo’s and Parent Zone are working together to develop a new tool that helps children’s social care professionals to feel more confident and better informed about online risks.
Research shows that there are problems with how professionals support young people to stay safer online. We want to change this, so that all professionals have the knowledge and confidence to help keep more young people safer online.
We are looking for young people to join Project Backpack and help design this tool with us.
What happens if I am part of the project?
If you are happy to be part of the project, a researcher from Barnardo’s Innovation Lab Team will have a conversation with you about what you think about online risks.
There will be activities to do and games to play. This is not a test. There are no right or wrong answers. We just want to know what you think.
You will not be asked to share any information about your own experiences online.
This conversation will be in person at a place near to where you live. It will be you, the researcher and a small group of other young people. There will also be an adult you know and trust there.
During the conversation there will be no pressure to answer any questions and we can stop at any time.
Do I have to say yes?
No, it’s totally up to you. No one will be upset if you say no. You can change your mind at any time.
You don’t have to tell us your reason for not taking part if you don’t want to. If you say no, it won’t affect any help you or your child/young person might receive from Barnardo’s.
Who might you meet?
You will meet Rhiannon, a researcher from the Barnardo’s Innovation Lab.
You might also meet a small number of other young people.
What will I get for taking part?
To say thank you for talking to us, you will be given:
• A £15 gift voucher of your choice
• A certificate to show you took part
Is anyone going to be taking notes?
The researcher will be taking notes about some things that we talk about. You can say if there are some things you don’t want written down.
Any notes will be kept anonymous – that means not linked to your name or personal details. No one will know who said what.
You can tell us if you’re ok with us taking notes or recordings at the start of the session.
Will anyone know what I say?
We might share anonymous (not linked to your real name) findings from the research with Barnardo’s employees who are working to improve services for other children and young people.
We will also get back in touch with you to let you know how your ideas have helped us.
If you have any questions at all, email: ilresearch@barnardos.org.uk.
