Adult assisting at camp

Adult assisting at camp

Thank you for volunteering to help us at one of our upcoming camps… your help makes all the difference.

We will require you to have a DBS in place with the Scouts Association… they will only accept their own.

Once that is sorted, we can then thing about camping.

As a Team Member, your day will consist of supervising an activity or cooking (mainly relating to Scouts as, at camp, they will cook in patrols). When it comes to cooking, please (as much as it will drive you potty!), please do your best to cook according to the way all Patrols have been asked to cook. Cooking on open fires is at a different level than cooking at home, so we have tried and tested methods.

Aside from that most times it is a question of pitch in and help out where necessary… whilst it is really full-on and busy…. there is downtime available!

If you have to leave the site at any time, please do let one of the Team Leads know.

Do’s and don’ts…

Please read the Scouts Yellow Card for guidance on Safeguarding which can be found here

Dietary requirements

Food is provided for you at camp… therefore it is really important that you let us know of any particular dietary requirements at least 2-weeks before camp so we can plan accordingly.

Kit List

Very few of our camps involve sleeping indoors… so please be prepared for outdoor camping.
Your kit list will be similar to your child’s kit list with the following exceptions…

  • Tent – we will supply our tent – please double-check with the team to confirm
  • Plates & cutlery – you do not need to bring your own… we will supply
  • Cup – if you are OK with a disposable cup then we will provide… if not, please bring your own camp mug
  • Sleeping – You can either bring a sleeping bag or a duvet – just don’t tell your child!
  • Sleeping – you can either bring a roll-mat, or, you can upgrade (!!!) and bring your own air bed (please have a method to inflate) or camp bed – we do have a spare camp bed (or 2) available. If you don’t have one, you can use one of ours. Please let us know so you can collect BEFORE the camp, but these are on a first-come, first-served basis
  • You can either bring a pillow… or roll-up your jumper and use that!
  • A camping chair – great for round the camp-fire or when you need to sit and supervise!
  • Most of our camps have an electricity supply – you can bring your charger to charge up your phone or power bank.
  • Most times the shower for the adults is separate from the Young People, so please bring something to carry your shower kit and clothes in as it is normally further away!
  • Pair of flip-flops or crocs for the shower
  • If you are a light sleeper… earplugs are great!

Skills to share

Do you have any skills to share for camp? Do you have an idea for an activity?
Yes?
Please do let us know… we would be glad to hear from you and to integrate it into the programme for camp.

During camp

We do our best to not assign you to your own child’s patrol as that gives your child the needed independence and the ability to learn new skills.
If a problem / issue with another Scout occurs, please encourage your child to talk to one of the Team Leads… that way, there is no bias in sorting a situation.
